Concept:

Capturing the sounds people hear when they crack open a window as it gets warmer in an urban environment. The podcast captures the outside from the perspective of an indoor space.

In order to materialize this concept, I asked people from different neighborhoods via a google form what they think spring sounds like outside their window. “What lets you know spring has arrived?”

The result for each neighborhood ended up being a combination of sounds such as birds, the ice cream truck, groups of people talking, etc. Each soundscape episode is unique to the area. The hope with this platform is to create a community through sound, as neighbors would be able to fill out what they hear and then see it as a part of a collection. The epsiode would also serve as an archive for people to look back on during the colder months, or maybe for those who have moved out of the area and wish to listen to the sounds of spring in NYC.

Google Form Description:

Do you ever open your window and think, “Wow! it finally sounds like Spring!”?
In this soundscape, we want to recreate that experience, and how it manifests differently throughout multiple NYC neighborhoods.

Tell us about the sounds you associate with Spring!
Submit by March 19th

First Name:
(To be featured in the soundscape’s description!)

Please list the sounds that you associate with Spring.
(Preferably specific sounds. Ex: “the chatter from the line for Luigi’s pizza” )

List as many sounds as you can think of!

Podcast Episode Covers

Podcast Landing Platform. Each with clickable windows that preview sound submissions for episodes. As more episodes are added, the archive grows to resemble an apartment building.

Platform for additional Podcast Titles

The concept behind the overall platform is to display the podcasts as human figures, each with their own “speech bubble” which then would lead the viewer to a list of episodes for that podcast.
